sadhu III
A piece that seeks to combine two themes of my work, faces and forms, and uses the properties of Portland stone to create a textural contrast between the skin and the hair. The starting block of stone influenced the whole design, in particular the design of the hair patterns and the scale of the head overall (4/5 life size).
In this piece I wanted to capture the smiling eyes and cheeks that are so often seen in photographs of Sadhus and so I developed my own method of using the pointing tool. I adapted the method to enable me to transfer a clay face directly into a rough block of stone and then build the hair and beard around it as an imagined construct.
