making faces
Over the years I've tried many different ideas and techniques to enable me to carve a face into a block of stone capturing the intended mood and emotion in the block.
The ideas for the faces come from different origins, be it inspired by the texture of the starting stone (sadhu series), Francis Bacon paintings (george), or inspired by other artists such as Brancusi or Young.
Process Evolution
I first tried to carve directly from drawings or photos into a boulder (emily series) and then explored modelling in plaster and carving back (ernest 3.0). I then moved on to making portraits in clay and using callipers to transfer the features into the stone (sadhu II) and then in the last 2 years I've learned how to use the pointing tool (stanley).
Most recently Ive adapted the traditional pointing technique to speed the carving process and make it more responsive and flexible.
