process
I consider each piece as an experiment to try something new, to learn, to develop, to discover.
I’m exploring different materials, creative processes, tools and techniques and each step takes me further on my journey. I mostly work with stone but have tried plaster on wire frames and clay modelling.
Barbara Hepworth’s direct carving approach and principle, “truth to material” has been a guiding force for a lot of what I do where I have aligned the textures and properties of the stone to the idea and its execution and I don't force the material to imitate something alien to it.
Taking inspiration from the creative processes of Moore and Hepworth, I’ve collected objects from nature and used them to develop my own abstract forms. Over time I’ve developed units of form as building blocks akin to Arp’s concretions,
Through my desire to capture character and human emotion in stone I’ve developed my own carving process using the pointing tool. This has enabled me to develop portraits in clay and carve just the face directly into rough blocks of stone such as the Sadhu series.
Other projects I've explored include; Colour and Form, Carving for Colour, The Sea and standing stones
