amber helix
Taking inspiration from worn seashells and orchid blooms this piece seeks to apply Hepworth's truth to material principle by aligning a pirouetting helical form with the glowing onyx stone. The varied textures and colours of the orange onyx are enhanced by the movement of the piece.
The onyx was the most challenging stone I've worked so far, with textures ranging from soft white powdery veins to fibrous glass like sections to very hard deep orange crystals. Feeling the response of the material to the hammer and chisel was intense with a constant fear of a fibrous section falling off.
